Characteristics:

Habit

Shrub, 1-3 m tall, 2-3 m wide; stiff and loosely upright, somewhat extended when old; moderately growing

Blossom

White in short racemes, slightly pungent fragrance; beginning of May before leaves shoot

Leaves

Reverse ovoid, circular, buds and leaves white tomentose when shooting, later dark green; grey-green underneath; red to orange in autumn; September to October

Fruits

Elongated, round; like berries, dark blue to black, edible, slight sweetish flavour

Roots

Shallow to cordate roots, not sensitive, adaptable, with fine, far-reaching root system, occasionally with runners

Demands

Full sun to light shade; suffers under deep shade, tolerant of heat, likes warmth and cool areas, frost hardy; low to high humidity; resistant to wind and urban pollution
