Inconspicuous, like pipes, greenish brown, end of April to May

Leaves

10-30 cm, cordate, leathery, deep green, pale yellow from November; dense and without gaps, leaves overlapping like roof tiles

Rare, some 10 cm long, like cucumbers, green, unpalatable

Sun to shade, not sensitive to sun, tolerates sun in moist soil, extremely frost hardy, good for urban areas, moderately tolerant of wind
