Habit

Usually a large tree, 8-22 (30) m tall, 6-8 m wide; occasionally smaller, asymmetrical; light, highly domed crown with loosely overhanging twigs; fast-growing in the first 20-25 years, 40-60 (80) cm a year, then only growing slightly

Inconspicuous, seeds slightly opening

Intense, dense and very shallow , main roots directly under the surface; extremely sensitive to soil compaction, filling in, and paving over
