Medium-size or only small tree, 8-12 (15) m tall, 4-6 (10) m wide; ovoid, round crown when old, often with several stems, but also with one stem and leader; branches vertical to stiffly upright, twigs extended horizontally to slight arching, slow growing, 20-30 cm a year

Round to cordate, early shoots, beginning of May, soft bronze, later pale green, brilliant yellow-orange in autumn, more cream-white in the shade, October; never turning its colours on all alkaline or dry soil; the leaves somewhat damaged by late frost at the beginning of May and the autumn leaves give off a pleasant, far-reaching aroma
