Characteristics:
Habit
Normal shrub, 2-3 m tall, 3-5 m wide, initially upright, later broad to broadly prostrate, twigs taking root on contact with the ground, like a thicket; fast-growing
Branches and bark
Deep red or blood-red on young twigs, preferably in late winter; after 5 years, bark is inconspicuous, corky grey

Modest, white umbels after leaves shoot, end of May

Ovoid, bluish to dark green; greenish orange in September to October
Fruits
Whitish, fleshy berries in October
Demands
Sun to semi-shade, not lasting in full shade, withers in hot areas, extremely frost hardy, wind resistant
Soil
Moist or fresh soil preferred, but withstands moderate droughts; not demanding, all not too poor substrates
Note
If value is placed on an attractive bark colour all year, the shrub should be cut back to the ground in March as new shoots have the best colours the following year
