Alle Farben des Herbstes zeigen sich im brillanten Farbspiel von Crataegus crusgalli und die kleinen Bäume warten bereits ab September mit ihren gelb bis orangerot glänzenden Blättern auf. Die Laubfärbung ist ein schöner Kontrast zu dem roten, oft überreichen Fruchtbehang. Die auch Hah-nensporn-Weißdorn oder Hahnendorn genannte Art lässt sich sehr gut in Form schneiden und wächst zu wunderbaren Formgehölzen heran. Der deutsche Name weist auf die bis zu 8 cm langen, leicht gebogenen Dornen an seinen Zweigen hin. Das macht ihn, neben seinen dichten Zweigen, zu einem perfekten Vogelschutzgehölz. Crataegus sind anpassungsfähige und anspruchslose Tiefwurzler, die neutrale bis alkalische Standorte bevorzugen und gern in sonnigen bis halbschattigen Lagen stehen.
