Styphnolobium japonicum / Sophora japonica - the climate change miracle!

Insects and climate

The Sophora japonica / Styphnolobium japonicum (Japanese cordwood) is a very insect-friendly woody plant and as such belongs to the group of insect grazers or, more popularly, bee nourishing woody plants. The flowering time of the beautiful, delicate white flowers is between July and August, thus closing the gap between spring and autumn.

Sophores are optimal urban trees, because thanks to their high heat and drought tolerance and resistance to fumes, they thrive in these extreme locations. In addition, it is low-maintenance and there is no known pest or fungal infestation.

Did you know?

The Japanese cordwood loves well-drained, dry soil and can cope with little nutrients. It therefore thrives even in barren locations. Even long periods of drought do not bother Sophora japonica and it also copes well with heat. Sunny sites are perfect, partial shade is tolerated, but shade should be avoided.

Only the young sophores are slightly sensitive to frost, but older trees thrive at temperatures as low as -25°C.
