Trees as climate saviours
Forested and other green, woody areas provide an immense service for our lives on Earth. Through photosynthesis, they provide oxygen - the nutrition basis for all life. They filter the air and clean it of pollutants and fine particles so that we can breathe well and stay healthy.
Large trees absorb rainwater so that it does not simply drain into the sewer system without being used. Woody plants have a natural water management system – from root to leaf! Thus, they create evaporative coolness!
Those are some of the many characteristics making woody plants extremely valuable in the time of climate change when we are heading towards ever higher temperatures and extreme weather events. They are THE air conditioner for outdoors!
Big trees are wellness resorts! They shape our environment and habitats, and they make life bearable for people in the city and urban areas. We enjoy their shadow, their evaporative coolness, their atmosphere, and last but not least, their look. They let us recover and release stress. They let us recover and relieve stress!
Large trees give us biodiversity - birds, insects, and small mammals use trees as a habitat and food. We also benefit in this way, and it secures our own basis of life.
