Nursery Lorenz von Ehren delivers large trees for the CERN Science Gateway in Switzerland

Delivery from 374 trees from Hamburg to Geneva.

The Lorenz von Ehren nursery (Hamburg) is starting the first delivery of large trees to the CERN Science Gateway in Geneva with a total of five trucks (Portail de la Science/ Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire/European Organization for Nuclear Research).

A project of superlatives! The figures alone speak for themselves: A total of 374 trees, spread across 70 trucks, will be delivered to the CERN Visitor Centre during the project until the end of April 2023 – in 24 partial deliveries. Among them are mainly large trees (trunk circumference from 40-45 cm to 100-120 cm, measured at a height of one meter).

„A project that is fun," enthuses Bernhard von Ehren, managing partner of the Lorenz von Ehren nursery. "Large trees have a significantly higher climate-relevant balance than small trees. In this project, the trees are planted in such a way that the building is integrated into the surrounding forest.“

The CERN Science Gateway was designed by the renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano. It includes a visitor centre with permanent exhibitions, a spacious auditorium, and rooms for scientific training.

The idea behind the concept is to surround the building with trees, thus creating a connection to the natural, adjacent forest. The building itself will be equipped with over 2,000 square meters of solar panels. With the specially cultivated forest from Lorenz von Ehren nursery around the building, a CO2-neutral (zero ecological) footprint is created.

The first 14 trees from Lorenz von Ehren Tree Nursery will go on their journey on Nov 8th 2022. They include deciduous trees such as field maple (Acer campestre), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), hop beech (Ostrya carpinifolia), wild cherry (Prunus avium 'Plena'), Turkey oak (Quercus cerris) and Swedish whitebeam (Sorbus 'Brouwers'). The trees are about seven meters tall, three to four meters wide, up to 24 years old and weigh around two tons.

“A fantastic project! Our 374 mainly large trees will grow over time in such a way that they can hardly be distinguished from the trees which have grown in cities up to now.”
