Habit
Impressive large tree, (15) 20-25 m tall, 6-8 m wide; initially broadly conical, later asymmetrically cylindrical; branches bent upwards like a thick candelabra, loosely branched, lower branches overhanging with age, flattened crown; slow or medium-growing, 20-30 m a year

Branches and bark
Orange on young shoots, strongly smelling of turpentine; conspicuous, asymmetrically chequered bark, from yellow-brown and cinnamon to almost black
Leaves
Needles in threes; extraordinary long 15-25 cm, dark green, somewhat twisted needles; usually only borne on the twigs for three years in clusters at the ends of shoots
Fruits
Light to reddish brown cones, up to 15 cm long, plentiful when old
Roots
Deep roots, lightly branched; needs good anchoring (post or base-supports) as it only anchors itself moderately; extremely sensitive to floods and soil compaction
Demands
Sun, intolerant of shade, tolerant of heat, frost hardy; occasionally sensitive to late frost; good for urban areas, tolerant of wind
Soil
Dry to fresh; adaptable; very acidic to slightly alkaline, prefers well drained, sandy-loamy substrates; not growing on heavy, loamy or clay soil
