Characteristics:
Habit
Prostrate, extended small shrub, 1-1.5 (3) m tall and wide; initially dense cushions, gradually growing upwards and becoming loose-domed; very slow-growing
Blossom
Male flowers deep red at the base of May shoots
Leaves
Needles in fives, very densely packed, powerful blue, more yellow-grey in winter
Fruits
Small cones, up to 4.5 cm long, often in clusters, initially violet, later dark brown; early cones
Demands
Sun, sensitive to heat, frost hardy; for cool, humid areas; good for urban areas, wind resistant
Soil
Moderately dry to fresh; sensitive to dampness, grows on all well drained substrates, no growth on heavy soil
