Medium-size deciduous tree, 10-14 (20) m tall, 6-12 (15) m wide, initially slender, later broad-ovate, semi-open crown, branches ascending, horizontal to overhanging when old, moderate growth, 50 (-80) cm growth per year

Summer green, striking reddish shoots, ovoid to heart-shaped, pointed, serrated leaf margin, the largest leaves of all poplars, up to 35 cm long and 15 cm wide, leaf upper surface initially light green, later glossy deep green, paler underneath, slightly hairy, red petiole and veins, golden yellow in autumn

Deed heart root, high proportion of fine roots, does not tolerate fluctuating groundwater levels
