Habit
Broad, large shrub, occasionally a small tree, (1) 2-4 m tall or even up to 10 m, 3-8 m wide, broad and loosely upright, crooked stem or several stems; fast-growing
Branches and bark
Initially smooth and grey, gradually peeling like that of plane trees in large, thin scales, cinnamon-brown or red-chequered (best recognised by these characteristics)

Dioecious in crooked catkins, green-yellow, before or while leaves shoot, April to May; pleasantly fragrant

Elongated-lanceolate, 10-15 cm long, both sides shiny green - unlike all other willows! - impressive autumn colours in October with bright golden yellow

Shallow and far-reaching; extremely resistant to floods, covering and paving

Sun to light shade, likes warmth, usually frost hardy, needs high humidity; wind resistant
